Quantemol team next to Japanese monument in UCL
The Japanese monument in UCL was built in 1993 to commemorate the arrival of the first 5 Japanese students ever to study outside Japan 1863 from Choshu clan and arrival of 14 Japanese students of the Satsuma clan in 1865. The students were noblemen, who had to endure a treacherous voyage to the UK. When they arrived, UCL was the only university in England in which both teaching and research were open to all races and religions, and to people of all social classes, regardless of their political leanings. The students were keen to advance the technological capabilities of their nation. They returned to play key roles in the development of modern Japan and formed the first Meiji Government.
